In life, we often focus so much on the end goal that we overlook the small victories along the way. But those little wins—no matter how insignificant they may seem—are the building blocks of success. Progress, not perfection, defines achievement. This lesson became especially meaningful to me during one of the most challenging periods of my life.

Over a year ago, what started as a harmless flu quickly spiraled into something far more serious. Within days, I began coughing up blood, and after a visit to the doctor, I was told to go straight to the hospital. The doctor suspected a blood clot, and she was right. I was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism and placed on blood thinners for the next six months.

Finding Strength Through Struggle

The months that followed were some of the toughest I’ve ever endured. Breathing was difficult, walking to my room felt like a marathon, and I was a shadow of the person I used to be. Balancing work, taking care of my kids, and managing a home felt impossible. Just when I thought I was turning a corner, I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and told that recovery could take years.

At first, the prognosis felt overwhelming. How would I cope? How could I stay positive? It was during this time that I learned the importance of celebrating small wins. These weren’t grand achievements, but they represented progress—a reminder that I was moving forward, even if the steps were small.

Small Wins, Big Impact

Here are a few examples of the small wins that carried me through:

Walking Upstairs Without Getting Breathless

A few steps may not seem like much, but when you’ve struggled to breathe, every step feels monumental. Walking upstairs without needing to rest was a big milestone for me.

Playing with My Kids

The first time I had the energy to play with my kids, even for just a few minutes, felt like a breakthrough.

Going To The Gym For The First Time

It had been well over a year before I was able to do any form of exercise at the gym. Stepping back into the gym had me hopeful and looking forward to building my fitness and strength once again

Doing the School Run

It always felt like I had to pick and choose what I could. Doing just a little too much would tip me into exhaustion. The first school pick up after so long was a big milestone for me.

Why Small Wins Matter

Small wins remind us that progress is happening, even when it feels slow. They build momentum, encourage positivity, and give us the strength to keep going. Over time, these small victories add up to significant change.
